The Philadelphia Catholic League’s boys basketball playoffs got underway tonight, and the February madness which culminates in a semi-final at The Palestra began to take shape. So far, the first seeded Archbishop Wood and second seeded Neumann-Goretti are waiting in the next round, and there will be two more matchups on Friday. Here’s what the schedule looks like:
Conwell-Egan Eagles (5-8) at Bonner-Prendergast Friars (7-6) @ 7:00pm
La Salle College HS Explorers (5-8) at Archbishop Carroll Patriots (7-6) @ 7:00pm
-Bonner-Prendie has been riding great play of 6’8” First-Team All Catholic rim protector Ajiri Johnson. Conwell-Egan has played very scrappy basketball, and junior guard Patrick Anderson (18.0 ppg) dropped a school record 42 points in a close loss to Roman Catholic on Feb. 3. Both teams aren’t coming into the game too hot, as BP has dropped 4 of their last 6, and CE has lost 5 straight. Bonner-Prendie beat the Eagles 69-52 in their regular season matchup.
-Carroll has been riding freshman guard AJ Hogard (10.3 ppg) and Second-Team All Catholic guard Justin Anderson (12.5 ppg) during their up and down season. The Patriots have won three straight however, and are hoping their momentum can keep stride through the playoffs. La Salle lost their regular season match up with the Patriots 50-45, and have played disciplined basketball losing several close games this year.
St. Joe’s Prep Hawks (8-5) at Roman Catholic Cahillites (10-3) @ TBD
**TBD at Archbishop Wood Vikings (12-1) @ TBD
**TBD at Neumann-Goretti Saints (12-1) @ TBD
Father Judge Crusaders (9-4) at Archbishop Ryan Raiders (9-4) @ 7:00pm
Notes: Archbishop Wood is the top ranked team due to their victory against Neumann-Goretti in the regular season, and the Vikings will play the lowest seeded team to advance from Wednesday’s games. Neumann-Goretti will play the other to advance.
Wood and Neumann-Goretti are both boasting big-time starpower, with Viking Collin Gillespie headed to Villanova and Saint Quade Green headed to Kentucky. Friday will be must follow basketball around the Philadelphia area.
