Philadelphia Catholic League Quarterfinal Preview

Roman Catholic (3) vs. St. Joseph’s Prep (6)

Philadelphia Catholic League – Quarterfinal

Philadelphia University, 7 PM

Tonight at Philadelphia University, Roman Catholic and St. Joseph’s Prep will face off for the second time in just five days. On February 12, the Prep defeated Roman Catholic in a 73-70 overtime thriller.

This time around, the stakes will be a bit higher as a trip to the Philadelphia Catholic League semifinals and the Palestra waits ahead for the victor.

Speedy Morris’ Prep squad is led by First Team All-Catholic guard Kyle Thompson (Junior) who is averaging 16.4 PPG this season. Teammates, classmates, and Second Team All-Catholic honorees Darius Kinnel (Junior) and big man, Edward Croswell (Junior) have been key components to their team’s success as well.

Two-time defending champions, Roman Catholic, is entering the playoffs, like always, hungry for another title. First year coach, and former First team All Catholic guard/assistant coach for St. Joseph’s Prep, Matt Griffin, leads the Cahillites.

The boys on Broad Street are pretty deep, with five different players averaging double digits in points this season. Leading the way is First Team All-Catholic, (Junior) Allen Bertrand averaging 14.9 PPG. Seniors Dak’Quan Davis and JP Sanders head the prominent upperclassmen, while Seth Lundy (Sophomore) and (Freshman) Guard Lynn Greer are crucial producers as well.

In years past, we have been used to seeing these two programs face off later in the playoffs. Friday should be a goodie, and expect a great showing from both student sections as well. Roman Catholic looks to continue their recent success and capture a three-peat, while the Hawks of St. Joe’s try to knock off the reigning champs for a second time in less than a week.

Archbishop Ryan (4) vs. Father Judge (5)

Philadelphia Catholic League – Quarterfinal

Archbishop Ryan, 7 PM

The Battle for the bragging rights of Northeast Philadelphia will take place tonight. Four miles separate these two schools, Ryan, north of Grant Avenue while Judge resides south. A trip down 95 South to the Palestra and Catholic League Semifinals is on the line.

The two teams previously met on January 20 with Archbishop Ryan topping Father Judge 48-36.

Father Judge’s coach, Sean Tait, was recently named co-coach of the year with Archbishop Wood’s John Mosco. Leading Tait’s lineup has been First Team All-Catholic guard, Marc Rodriquez (Senior). Rodriquez is averaging 19 PPG for the Crusaders. Front-court partners, Matt O’Connor (Senior) and Mike Power (Senior) are also big contributors for the boys on Solly Avenue.

The Ryan Raiders enter this contest as the fourth seed overall. Two seniors and First Team All-Catholic honorees Izaiah Brockington and Matiss Kulackovskis lead head coach Joe Zeglinski’s club. Brockington averages 17.9 PPG, while big man Kulackovskis averages 16.9 PPG for the Raiders of Academy Road.

Two 1,000-point scorers will be featured in this matchup including Judge’s Rodriquez, and Ryan’s Brockington. With so many stakes involved in this game, it does not change this always, intense rivalry. Expect a tough, hard fought game between two programs trying to put their names on top of the Philadelphia Catholic League.

Father Judge’s last basketball championship came in 1998, while Archbishop Ryan seeks their first crown ever. Perhaps this year’s champion will come out of Northeast Philadelphia, but one will have to get through the other on Friday night to do so.
