Philadelphia Catholic League Boy's Basketball Semifinal Preview - #1 Archbishop Wood vs. #4 Arch

2017-02-22 Archbishop Ryan vs Archbishop Wood Boys Basketball

Game 2 - 8PM at The Palestra, University of Pennsylvania

#1 Archbishop Wood vs. #4 Archbishop Ryan

Historically, this game is very different than the matchup in game one tonight. Both programs seek their first ever Catholic League title.

Tonight is Archbishop Wood’s first appearance at the Palestra since 2005 where the Vikings lost to the Saints of Neumann-Goretti. Wood’s head coach, and Catholic League Co-coach of the Year, John Mosco is very familiar with the Palestra though. Before taking the Wood job, he was a coach at Neumann-Goretti and a big part of their success as well.

The Vikings are led by Catholic League MVP and Villanova commit, Collin Gillespie. Gillespie averaged 24.1 PPG this season. Juniors Seth Pinkney and 1st team All-Catholic Tyree Pickron have been crucial to Wood’s historic season thus far. 2nd team All-Catholic guard, (Sr) Matt Cerruti has been a key contributor as well averaging 11.3 PPG.

Archbishop Wood lost on opening weekend in league play to Father Judge but has not looked back since, winning thirteen straight Catholic League games.

Archbishop Ryan is led by coach, Joe Zeglinski. Zeglinski was a standout star at Ryan, along with playing college ball for the Hartford Hawks. His Raider squad is led by Latvian big man (Sr) Matiss Kulackovskis, who is coming off a 25 point performance against Father Judge last week. (Sr) Izaiah Brockington, NJIT commit, and 1st team All-Catholic has been a major factor to the Raiders success as well. Chris Palantino and Fred Taylor have been key contributors as the two combined for 15 boards in a quarterfinal win against Father Judge.

Ryan has not been to the Palestra since 2008, where they fell short to North Catholic in the title game.

The two teams previously met on January 6th, with Wood coming out on top 63-34. This Ryan team is not the same team though. Of Ryan’s four losses, three have come to the teams that remain in the playoff field. Expect an extremely tough, and hard-nosed game as Ryan seeks revenge, while Wood tries to complete their best basketball season in school history.
