Penncrest heads to Title Game after spoiling Great Valley’s run
The first game of the District 1 5A semi-final between the Patriots of Great Valley and the Lions of Penncrest set the tone for a great night of basketball at Temple University’s Liacouras Center. Penncrest pulled out a scrappy one by a 41-33 final.
The second seeded Patriots, fresh off of a 41-38 victory over Springfield (Delco.) in the quarterfinals, came into the game led in scoring by sophomore Alex Capitano. Capitano, led the way once again for the Patriots, adding 7 points in the first half. Penncrest star junior guard, Tyler Norwood, scored 30 points in the Lions overtime victory over Wissahickon in the quarterfinals, and it was no surprise the 5’7” spark plug led the way on Wednesday- ending the semi-final with a game-high 21 points.
GAME NOTES: Early On… Tyler Norwood lifted the packed Penncrest student section to their feet with a 3-pointer to open scoring in the first quarter, and that basket foreshadowed the rest of the night for number 0. A sloppy offensive first half that saw 4 turnovers from both teams led to a close score of 17-16, favoring the Lions.
Norwood led all scorers with 8, followed by Capitano of GV with 7. Penncrest's Mike Mallon led all rebounders with 6 in the first half. A turning point came in the 4th quarter, as a dead even 3rd quarter ended with Penncrest maintaining their one point lead 29-28. Everyone in the building had a feeling this one would end in thrilling fashion.
Final Moments… Tyler Norwood hit a pair of free throws and a jumper in back to back possessions (jumper at 2:59) that gave Penncrest a 35-30 lead over GV- their largest lead of the half. Great Valley’s three possessions following resulted in missed shots at a crucial point in the game. The late 5-point cushion proved to be deadly for the Patriots, as keep away from the Lions and 9 made free throws put the game out of reach. Gavin Frankenheimer from GV notched one of his game-high four 3-pointers with 14.1 seconds remaining. Penncrest will head to Villanova on Saturday March 4 at 2:00 p.m. for the district title.
