Mt. St. Joseph’s falls to #1 seed Springfield Cougars in District 1 5A Title Match
The top seeded Springfield Cougars took home the District 1 5A Girls Basketball Championship last Saturday afternoon, after defeating the seven-seed, Mt. St. Joseph’s 37-28.
Guard Julie Hoover kicked it off for Mt. St. Josephs with the first two points. The Springfield Cougars attempted to answer but were unsuccessful as Mt. St. Joseph’s extended their lead to 6-0.
It wasn’t until under a minute left in the first period when Jordan from Springfield sunk a 2-pointer to bring the first period to a close with the score 6-2.
The scoring pace of the second period picked up immensely as the Cougars quickly tucked away two more for a 6-4 score. Mt. St. Joseph’s held the lead until the final minute in the first half when Senior guard Steph Mcann made a basket to tie the game 12-12.
The Cougars dominated second half play-action, as they took and held onto the lead for the remainder of the contest.
The third period saw consistent scoring for both teams, but it was a pair of 3-pointers from Springfield that moved them out of reach, despite Mt. St. Joseph’s buzzer beater to close the period 20-17.
It was the fourth period when Springfield took control and showed dominance. Guard Jordan drew the foul after a two-pointer for a successful lone foul shot to start the eight-point run for the Cougars.
Mt. St. Joseph’s attempted a late period rally with their final shot, but it was not enough to seal the deal. Although they are without the District 1 title, Mt. St. Joseph’s will continue their contention for the state title.
