O’Hara runs over Upper Dublin in first round action

The opening game on Friday night at Philadelphia University was a lopsided one from start to finish, and the Cardinal O’hara (22-5) girls scrapped their way to a comfortable victory over Upper Dublin (21-7). The contest was the first game in the PIAA Class 6A girls’ playoffs.

O’hara set the tone from the opening tip, starting with an 8-0 run and never looking back. What the noticeably smaller Lions lacked in height, they made up for in hustle, and then some. Outstanding play from Mary Sheehan, including a buzzer beating mid-range jumper to end the first quarter, kept the pressure on Upper Dublin. The first half ended 25-7.

The real story was the defense by the O’hara guards, as almost every possession for Upper Dublin seemed noticeably rushed and uneasy.

Guards Molly Paolino and Kenzie Gardler (Villanova) played their roles and aided speedy quick point guard and future Drexel Dragon Hannah Nihill to convert plenty of UD rushed passes into points on the other end. It was interesting to see for the most of the game, close to all five of O’hara’s players on the court had the attributes of a guard.

The speed was too much to handle for an Upper Dublin team who came in with just seven losses in 28 games, and normal sharpshooter Josie Barrett was bottled up by the press of O’hara. Although the final was 53-25 in the Lions favor, UD’s Barrett was able to increase her school record of made 3-pointers to 181.

O’hara will advance into the state playoffs, and SFBN will have you covered through their journey.
