Low-seeded Souderton continues Cinderella run with win over PW
ROYERSFORD, PA -
There were 11 girls basketball teams out of District 1 that received berths into the PIAA 6A bracket. The 11th seed out of that group, the Souderton Indians, have defied the odds and reached the state semi-finals with a 43-32 victory over District 1’s #2 seed, Plymouth-Whitemarsh, on Saturday afternoon at Spring-Ford High School in Royersford.
After knocking off District 3 champion Central Dauphin in the first round, Souderton then upset District 1’s 4th seed CB South in the second round before their win over PW. In the three state playoff games thus far, Souderton has only allowed a combined 88 points, which comes out to under 30 points per game. The Indians stellar defense has ultimately punched their ticket into the PIAA 6A girls basketball final four.
This game was very close in the first half as Souderton led by one point, 21-20. The Colonials of PW stayed in the game in the beginning of the third quarter, and led 29-26 with just over three minutes in the frame. But then Souderton star forward Kate Connolly hit a three-pointer to tie it and then got a put back to drop, giving the Indians a 31-29 lead with 2:30 left in the third that they would never relinquish.
Souderton ended up finishing the third quarter going on an 11-0 run, capped off by a Connolly block on star PW guard Taylor O’Brien with seven seconds left, and then drained a half-court shot at the buzzer to give Souderton a 37-29 lead with one quarter remaining.
O’Brien was suffocated by Souderton’s defense all game and couldn’t get close to repeating her 31-point performance in PW’s second round win over Council Rock North.
Souderton will take on District 7 champion North Allegheny on Monday night for the right to advance to Hershey. District 12 and Philadelphia Catholic League champion Cardinal O’Hara will face the other remaining District 1 team, 6th seeded Boyertown, in the other 6A girls basketball semi-final.
