The Imhotep Panthers added another PIAA 4A State Championship title to their resume on Saturday after defeating the Strong Vincent Colonels 80-52.
Strong Vincent entered the title match as the District X champions after defeating Quaker Valley to advance to the final round. Their early success, however, hadn’t prepared them for the task at hand against Imhotep.
The Panthers were initially off to a hot start as Imhotep senior point guard Daron Russell reached double digits in the first quarter with 14 points. Strong Vincent’s senior captain David Morris netted eight points, which gave the Colonels more than half of their total 11 points at the end of the first.
The Panthers dominance continued through the remainder of the first half, which concluded with a halftime score of 48-26.
The second half was no different than the first and Imhotep continued to put up big numbers. It didn’t come as a surprise considering the Panthers defeated Greater Nanticoke 60-23 to advance to the finals.
In regards to next season, the Panthers will only lose one senior starter, so we can expect to hear their name again as the hunt for the 2018 title approaches.
