The Neumann-Goretti Saints defeated the Bishop Canevin Crusaders on Saturday for the PIAA AAA Girls State Championship title 62-56.
Despite falling short on Saturday, the Bishop Canevin Crusaders, out of Pittsburgh, are the District VII AAA Girls Champions and finished the regular season 23-5.
The Crusaders jumped out ahead to a 6-0 lead with contributions from Shamyjha Price, Lauren Gamble and Sarah Green.
As the reigning PIAA AAA state champs, the Saints struggled early on and allowed a 10-point lead until Ashley Jones scored a buzzer-beater to close the first quarter at 18-11.
It wasn’t until under the two minute mark of the first half that Goretti took their first lead at 26-25 and was able to head into halftime up 30-28.
The third quarter was in high favor for the Saints as they went on an 8-point run, opening the gap and pushing the Crusaders to their limit. Senior Guard Chyna Nixon had a significant contribution with 11 points in the third quarter.
But it was Ashley Jones who finished as the top scorer for the Saints as she rounded out the day with 20 points, with four successful 3-point attempts.
On the Crusaders side, they scored a total of 9 points in the third, compared to the Saints 22.
The fourth quarter gave the Crusaders the last bit of life they had left, as they put up 19 points, with Price recording nine on her own. However, it wasn’t enough to strip the defending champs from their title.
