The Reading Red Knights took home the PIAA 6A Boys State Championship title on Saturday after defeating the Pine Richland Rams 64-60.
Two hours prior to the anticipated tipoff, the GIANT Center was packed with Red Knights. A small student section for Pine Richland stood to the right of their team’s bench, but the remaining seats belonged to Reading.
It was back-and-forth action between the two squads. Despite the ranking difference, with Reading finishing third in District III and Pine taking the District VII title, the high-energy competition was felt from both teams on the court.
Reading senior Lonnie Walker began his performance with a steal, the first of four throughout the night. Reading held off Pine to close the first at 11-8, but it was the Rams of Pine Richland who snuck in with a buzzer-beater to secure a lead of 30-28 by the half.
Pine Richland’s lead didn’t last long, however, and Reading’s Tyrone Nesby IV scored 10 points in the third quarter. This put the Red Knights back in the lead at 47-41.
The score exchanges continued until the last few seconds of the game. Pine Richland senior Sean Colosimo scored the last points of the game with one second remaining on a 3-pointer and brought the game to its final score.
