Archbishop Wood wins 2nd straight girls basketball state title

The Archbishop Wood Vikings won their second consecutive girls basketball state championship on Saturday with a 34-26 victory over Trinity High School in the PIAA 5A title game. Senior guard Cassie Sebold led the way with 12 points, the lone Viking with double-figures.

Archbishop Wood started off hot from beyond the arc, knocking down three three-pointers in the first quarter – one each from junior forward Bridget Arcidiacono, senior guard Cassie Sebold and senior guard Shannon May.

After leading 9-4 through one quarter of play, the Vikings slowed things down just the way they’ve done all season and were perfectly comfortable with a 14-7 halftime lead.

The third quarter was more of the same, but Trinity more than doubled their first half point total and the Vikings led 19-15 heading into the final period.

Even though the fourth quarter was filled with more points for both teams, this game was about the Archbishop Wood defense clamping down on Trinity, just like they’ve done on opponents all year. And despite losing a heartbreaker in the Philadelphia Catholic League championship game at the end of February, the Vikings bounced back and reeled off five straight wins in the state playoffs to grab the gold at Hershey.
