RADNOR, PA – Even though Culver Academy and The Haverford School are separated by a 4-hour flight, the two private schools will meet for a third time in 364 days on Sunday in the 2017 Inter-Ac Invitational Championship. This will be the rubber match for this mini-rivalry as Culver defeated The Haverford School 8-7 in last year’s championship game on May 22nd, 2016 and the Fords got the better of the Eagles back on March 26th of this year by the same 8-7 score, in double overtime.
In the first game of the semi-final doubleheader on Friday, The Haverford School Fords defeated their in-league rivals, the Malvern Prep Friars, 13-10. After the Friars got the first goal of the game only six seconds in after winning the opening faceoff, the Fords answered back a couple minutes later to tie it at 1-1. But Malvern got their second goal before the end of the quarter, taking a 2-1 lead into the 2nd quarter.
The 2nd quarter however belonged to The Haverford School as they scored four unanswered to start the stanza and ultimately took a 7-3 lead heading into the locker room. Malvern Prep had a strong third quarter and closed the gap to two, trailing 10-8 heading into the 4th and final quarter. But the Fords slowed things down, took control of the faceoff circle and held on for the 13-10 victory.
While there were 23 goals scored in game one, game two between Culver Academy and Episcopal Academy only had 11 goals total. The Eagles of Culver Academy played methodically and slowed the game down from the opening faceoff and there were no goals scored until under a minute remained in the first quarter. Culver struck first at the 53-second mark immediately followed by a goal by the Churchmen of Episcopal Academy about 30 seconds later, making the score 1-1 after 12 minutes of play.
The 2nd and 3rd quarter was completely controlled by Culver and EA could not get any offense going. The Eagles led the Churchmen 6-1 heading into the 4th quarter, but that’s when things got interesting. EA turned up the energy and scored four straight goals to make it a 6-5 game with two minutes to play. But unfortunately that was the closest they would get and Culver escaped with the one-goal victory.
The championship game between Culver Academy and The Haverford School will take place on Sunday May 21st at 5 PM at The Haverford School. The game can be seen live on the Facebook page of The Sports Fan Base Network at www.SFBN.live. Mike Samsel and Scott Gabrielsen will have the call.
