Pennsbury uses 9-run 3rd inning to advance to state championship

BOYERTOWN, PA -

The Pennsbury Falcons batted around in the visitor half of the third inning and scored nine runs on nine hits, ultimately giving them an easy 12-0 victory over the Liberty Hurricanes in a PIAA 6A baseball semi-final on Monday afternoon.

After Pennsbury got on the board in the 2nd inning on an RBI groundout by first baseman Kyle Dear, the flood gates opened in the 3rd starting with a line-drive single from starting pitcher Billy Bethel.  The Falcons then racked together five straight singles against Liberty starting pitcher Alex Super and then the wheels fell off for the Hurricanes.  Liberty committed three errors following the barrage of singles and the Falcons found themselves up 10-0.

That was more than enough for Bethel, who only needed 67 pitches to get through the five-inning shortened game due to the 10-run rule going into effect.  The Pennsbury hurler got better as the game went on, scattering seven hits while pitching to contact and inducing eight ground ball outs.

Offensively, Bethel, shortstop Justin Massiello, second baseman Ryan McCarty and third baseman Nick Price all had two hits apiece.  Every Falcon in the starting lineup got a hit, leading to 13 base knocks in all.  Pennsbury was solid in the field too as they only committed one error on the first batter that Bethel faced, turned a beautiful double play to end the 4th, and laser throw by catcher Josh Tesarck to gun down a Liberty stolen base attempt in the 2nd.

The Falcons will take on District 3 champion Dallastown in the 6A championship game in State College on Friday afternoon.  Dallastown defeated Hatboro-Horsham, St. Joseph’s Prep and State College on their path to the title game, and only gave up one run in each of those contests.
