NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA -
The Episcopal Academy Churchmen made a statement to the rest of the Inter-Ac League in their first game on Friday night, with a dominating 44-0 victory over the Philadelphia Catholic League's Monsignor Bonner-Archbishop Prendergast Friars.
The Churchmen (1-0) ran for 237 yards on the ground, including 88 by star running back DeeWil Barlee in just about one-half of play.
The EA defense was also very solid with five sacks and four tackles-for-loss, including a big 6-yard TFL by star outside linebacker Milt Mamula.
Bonner-Prendie (0-2) could not get anything going all night long and after managing only 51 yards in their opener last week, a 35-0 loss to rival Upper Darby, the Friars have now been outscored 79-0 to start the season. Head coach Jack Muldoon will look to get his team in the scoring column, and perhaps in the win column, against another Inter-Ac team, Penn Charter, next Friday night.
Meanwhile, Episcopal Academy will take on another PCL foe, the Conwell-Egan Catholic Eagles, on Saturday night at Truman High School in Levittown. Egan boasts one of the top running backs in the area in Patrick Garwo, so the Mamula and the Churchmen defense have a big challenge in front of them in the second game of the year.
