Northeast defeats Gratz in big Philly Public League battle
PHILADELPHIA, PA -
In a Friday night Philadelphia Public League battle, on September 29th, 2017, the Northeast Vikings used their single-wing, run-heavy offense to control the ball and defeat the Simon Gratz Bulldogs, 33-18. The Vikings registered a total of 274 yards rushing on 61 attempts, with 5-foot-5 Danny Scott leading the pack of six running backs with 31 totes for 119 yards.
Running back Ubayd Steed started things off with a pair of 5-yard rushing touchdowns in the first and second quarters, followed by a 5-yard run by Kyle Morasch, giving Northeast an early 20-0 in the second quarter.
Gratz quarterback Amir Gillis did keep the Bulldogs in the game through the air with three passing touchdowns, including two to wide receiver Maurice Mazzccua. But it wasn't enough of an answer for Northeast's run game.
After the second Gillis passing touchdown to Jordan Mariney, the Bulldogs got to within eight points at 20-12 early in the fourth quarter. But Northeast came right back with a 10-play, 67-yard drive that was completed with a 20-yard rushing touchdown by Saleem Thompson. Then after a Gillis 81-yard touchdown bomb to Mazzccua, Scott had a 5-yard touchdown run to complete the scoring.
Defensively, Northeast's front seven kept Gratz from getting their ground game going. On the night, the Bulldogs had 11 rushing attempts for minus-30 yards. The Vikings had seven sacks on the night, including two by Morasch, who runs the ball on offense and is the middle linebacker on defense.
With both of these teams in the Liberty division in the Public League, Northeast improves to 3-1 in league play while Gratz falls to 2-2. Gratz will look to get back over the .500-mark in league play when they take on Central Friday night, while the Vikings will play a non-league game Friday afternoon at Springside Chestnut Hill.
