West Catholic defeats Germantown Academy in defensive battle
CHESTER, PA -
A week after losing a tough game to Philadelphia Catholic League rival Neumann-Goretti, the West Catholic Burrs bounced back with a hard-earned 14-0 victory over the Germantown Academy Patriots late Friday night.
With the game starting at eight-o'clock at Widener University's Leslie C. Quick Stadium, perhaps both teams were a little sluggish out of the gate with the late start time. After three quarters, neither team had scratched the scoreboard making it 0-0 through 36 minutes of game play.
But the Burrs, who are now back over the 500-mark at 4-3, were driving to end the third quarter and almost 50 seconds in to the 4th quarter, junior running back Jacir Savoy punched into the endzone from eight-yards out and then proceeded to find pay dirt again on the 2-point conversion, making it 8-0 West Catholic.
Then with about three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the game, Savoy, now back as a punt returner, took it 48 yards to the house for his second score of the game. The two-point conversion failed this time, making the score 14-0 to end the scoring.
Savory was fantastic on Friday night, finishing with 39 carries for 171 yards and accounting for both touchdowns on the night for the Burrs. Savoy has now rushed for 517 yards in his last four games, including three 100-yard games.
This was the final non-league game of the year for West Catholic as they finish out the regular season with three Catholic League contests before getting ready for a likely rematch with Neumann-Goretti in the PCL 2A championship game.
For Germantown Academy, they fall to 3-2 on the year as they get set for the Inter-Ac League slate next week. The Patriots kick things off with a tough matchup at The Haverford School on Saturday October 14th.
