PHILADELPHIA, PA -
In a Public League 6A Quarterfinal, the Southern Rams defeated the George Washington Eagles, 44-16. For Southern, Zaki Samuels rushed ten times for 143 yards and a touchdown. Dwayne Parks had 15 totes for 135 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Sherriff Jones threw just five passes, but completed four of them for 105 yards.
Khalid Moore had two catches including one for a 35-yard touchdown reception. As a defender, Moore also scored the game’s first touchdown with just 12.8 seconds left before halftime when he stole the ball from Washington quarterback Cam Gentek and raced 85 yards untouched to the end zone.
Gentek was the man for the Eagles; as he passed, he connected on 14 of his 24 pass attempts for a total of 168 yards and one touchdown. He also ran 20 yards and had a rushing touchdown, thus accounting for both of Washington’s touchdowns on the day. Eagles wide receiver Donald Cole was the recipient of Gentak's 31-yard touchdown pass.
As a result of Southern’s penalties and a turnover, Washington controlled the ball most of the first half. They ran 31 offensive plays to Southern's 14. However, the second half was a different story and the Rams did what they do best and ran the football.
As a team, Southern had 298 rushing yards on 33 carries for an average of nine yards per carry. Along with Samuels and Parks, Jason Everett and Jones also had rushing touchdowns. On the other hand, Washington ran 32 times for 106 yards for an average of 3.3 yards per carry.
Southern will move on to the Semi-Finals next week to face Central, who defeated Kensington 44-6. The game is tentatively scheduled to be played at Central on Friday, November 3 at 3 p.m.
