New Foundations wins PJAA Girls Soccer Title on Penalty Kicks; Boys Lose in PKs

It took a little bit longer than expected, but the New Foundations Bulldogs defeated the Calvary Christian Lions (NJ) in penalty kicks on Thursday afternoon to win their second consecutive Penn-Jersey Athletic Association title.

There were no goals scored through regulation and even after two overtime periods, the score remained 0-0 between the Bulldogs and Lions. Thus the game went into the ever dramatic penalty kick scenario, putting a lot of pressure on these high school student-athletes.

The New Foundations Bulldogs, led by coaches Tim Burke and Nicole Wright, got four goals in penalty kicks from Emily Flade, Emily Lazicki, Kaitlin Bromley and Giyana Rivera. Bulldog goalkeeper Liz McNulty made a couple big stops on Calvary Christian’s penalty kick attempts to solidify the victory and championship for her team.

Unfortunately, the New Foundations boys soccer team lost on penalty kicks against Life Center Academy of Burlington, NJ, who have not won the PJAA boys soccer title for six years in a row.

The Bulldogs got off to a great start scoring only ten seconds into the opening tap on a beautiful goal by Eddie Kulmier. New Foundations scored again later in the half off a corner kick on a headball by TK Raegan, thus taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.

But Life Center battled back like defending champions do and knotted the game up at 2-2 before the final horn sounded in regulation. Like the girls championship game, there were no goals scored in both the first and second overtime.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Life Center came out on the better end after penalty kicks and the Warriors handed the Bulldogs a heart-breaking loss. New Foundations may be disappointed, but they are one of the youngest and most talented teams in the PJAA and will certainly be back in contention for the league title next season!

New Foundations is a charter school in the Torresdale section of Philadelphia, and being a member of the PJAA, their student-athletes have to deal with a lot of travel due to playing teams from all areas of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Central Jersey.

SFBN would like to wish a congratulations to both New Foundations soccer teams on great seasons!
