Central Hangs On Against South Philadelphia 20 -12

November 6, 2017

South Philadelphia Rams’ quarterback Sherriff Jones raced from the Central Lancers’ 18-yard line, avoided some tackles and then jumped over several would be tacklers at the goal line to give Southern an apparent touchdown that would have made the score 20-18, with a 2-point conversion try waiting in the wings to tie the game at 20. However, an illegal shift was called with just 11 seconds left, which negated the touchdown. Central Lancers will now move on to face the Northeast Vikings for the Philadelphia Public League 6A Championship.

The South Philadelphia Rams scored first when Dwayne "Pops" Parks went straight up the gut for an 82-yard TD burst. The 2-point conversion try failed and Southern led 6-0 with 4:26 showing on the first quarter clock.

The Lancers would tie the score late in the second quarter when QB Aquil Robinson tossed a short pass to Soosung Whang, who slipped through the Southern defense for a 69-yard TD reception. The PAT failed and the score was 6-6 with just 1:50 left before halftime. Southern answered right back when Jones connected with Khalid Moore on a 35-yard TD strike with just 15 seconds left. Again the PAT failed, but the Rams went ahead 12-6.

The Lancers took away Southern's momentum when Robinson connected with Deshawn Wiggins for a 39-yard TD with the clock showing all zeros.  Whang booted the extra point as the Lancers entered their locker-room ahead 13-12.

Behind, Robinson, who passed 15-21-221, scored at the 8:21 mark in the third quarter. First he hit Milton James for 31 yards and then Basheer Steed for 25 more. James Kee then ran for 17 yards to the Southern 4-yard line. On the next play, James scored on a run and Whang added the extra point to increase the lead to 20-12 with 8:21 remaining in the third quarter.

It appeared that Central would ice the game midway through the fourth period, but the Rams defense tightened up and ended the Lancers 57-yard drive at the Southern 3-yard line. The Rams were now facing 97 yards of pay dirt with just over seven minutes to play. However, behind two potential 1,000-yard rushers, Parks and Zaki Samuels, Southern marched to Central's 13-yard line.

After a 5-yard penalty, the ball was moved back to the 18-yard line before Jones made his valiant run to the end zone only to see the scoreboard remain the same after the penalty. On the day, Parks ran nine times for 114 yards. Samuels ran for 66 yards on 11 totes.  Jones passed 5-12-11 and ran 12-72. Moore had three receptions for 93 yards.  Whang ended the day with six catches for 114 yards and Kee led the Lancers in rushing, carrying 12 times for 64 yards.
