PHILADELPHIA, PA -
Even though Northeast had already defeated Central in the Public League 6A championship game by a score of 41-0 a couple weeks ago, this matchup on Thanksgiving was the biggest game of the year for both programs. In the annual rivalry event that dates back to 1892, the Northeast Vikings defeated the Central Lancers, 28-0.
Northeast got a touchdown midway through the first quarter on a 15-yard run by Sameen Thompson. Then after Northeast and Central traded several punts, running back Danny Scott broke free from 63 yards away and scored a touchdown midway through the second quarter, giving the Vikings a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Scott had another touchdown midway through the third quarter and then senior fullback/linebacker Kyle Morasch plunged in from 1-yard away late in the third. That made the score 28-0 and Northeast just coasted through the fourth quarter. Central could never really get anything going on offense and only broke into Viking territory a couple times all game. Scott was the player of the game, finishing with 126 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns.
The Central Lancers end the season with a 3-9 record while the Vikings finish with a record of 8-3, with their only losses coming to Imhotep, Neumann-Goretti and St. Joseph's Prep. All three of those teams made it to their respective classification state quarterfinals, with Tep and Prep making it into the 4A and 6A semifinals, respectively, and will play again next weekend.
