Garwo leads Conwell-Egan to win over Palisades, advances to state semifinals
PHILADELPHIA, PA -
Even though Conwell-Egan has been overshadowed all year in the Philadelphia Catholic League by the likes of St. Joseph's Prep, La Salle, Archbishop Wood and even Neumann-Goretti, the Eagles have now reached the state 3A semifinals after a convincing 34-17 over the Palisades Pirates on Saturday afternoon.
The Conwell-Egan rushing attack was on point all game long. First, Dajuan Harris scored from 57 yards away to give the Eagles an early 6-0 lead about midway through the first quarter. After the Palisades answered with a field goal to make it 6-3 at the end of the first, Egan star running back Patrick Garwo scored from 74 yards out on a basic run up the middle. Garwo punched another one in the end zone on a 1-yard plunge, giving Conwell-Egan a 21-3 lead at the half.
The Pirates of Palisades, out of District 11, struck first in the second half with a pass from quarterback Ethan Brader to wide receiver Matt McGrath to make it 21-10. Harris answered with an 11-yard rushing touchdown for Egan, making it 27-10 after three quarters.
Palisades got another touchdown pass from Brader at the start of the fourth quarter, but that 27-17 score would be the closest the Pirates would get. Garwo, who ended the day with 31 carries, 280 yards and three touchdowns, sealed the win for the Eagles on the defensive end with an interception with 23 seconds remaining.
Conwell-Egan now advances to the 3A state semifinals to take on the undefeated District 3 champion, the Middletown Blue Raiders. Egan is one of four District 12 schools to advance to the semifinals, with the others being St. Joseph's Prep in 6A, Archbishop Wood in 5A and Imhotep Charter in 4A.
