Archbishop Wood coasts over Gateway 49-14 for another state title

The Archbishop Wood Vikings won their fourth state football title in the last five years with an easy 49-14 victory over the Gateway Gators out of District 7 on Friday night in the PIAA 5A state football championship game. Wood jumped out to a 42-0 lead at halftime, and added one more touchdown in the third quarter and coasted from there.

Vikings running back Nasir Peoples finished with 267 yards on 25 carries and four touchdowns, including a monster 68-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Adrian Lambert also had a nice day on the ground with 98 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown. Quarterback Jack Colyar didn't have to do a whole lot through the air, completing all three of his passing attempts for a modest 17 yards, including one 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Pitts.

Even though Gateway did not come out on top in this state championship game, the Gators should hold their heads up high after a solid 14-2 season. This was the first time Gateway, who won the WPIAL, made it to the PIAA state playoffs since postseason play began in 1988. Gateway quarterback Brady Walker became the second-leading passer in WPIAL history and set a state record with over 4,000 passing yards this season.

Archbishop Wood finishes their championship season with a record of 12-2, with their only losses coming to Paramus Catholic of North Jersey and Philadelphia Catholic League rival St. Joseph's Prep. Despite the recent success of the PCL and District 12 at the state level, Wood was the only football state champion from the Philadelphia district this season.
