Imhotep's Thundering Herd Tramples Over Universal Audenried Charter

December 22, 2017

The “Thundering Herd,” also known as the Imhotep Panthers boys’ basketball team, made an early season appearance against the well regarded Universal Audenried Charter Rockets in Grays Ferry on Tuesday, December 19. Thus far, Imhotep has met every challenge with great aplomb, and continued the same at Audenried.

Strangling defense has become Imhotep’s trademark early on in the ’17-18 basketball campaign, and certainly the Rockets of Audenried felt the chokehold also. Halftime saw the Panthers establish a 40-23 lead, which was quickly stretched out early in the third and saw it balloon to nearly 30 at one point. By the end of the third quarter, the lead was 62-39.

So far this season the Panthers have beaten the Martin Luther King Cougars and Frankford Pioneers of the Pub, as well as the Roselle Catholic Lions. Frankford had only 17 points near the end of the third quarter. The Rockets became the forth team to fold under the onslaught of the trampling that has become customary for this squad that lost two high major D1 guards (David Beatty to South Carolina and Daron Russell to University of Rhode Island) from last year. They come at their opponents in waves of talent.

Coach Andre Noble has once again put together a highly qualified group which may contend once again into the Deep State. The final score of this Pub contest was 75-48 and it could have been an even bigger spread had Noble not called off the horses.

Last year these two schools matched up in the PIAA Tournament quarter final round Class 4A, with Imhotep taking a 70-51 win to move to the semi.

Seventh-year head coach Kenyatta Bey of Audenried has put together an athletic and talented group which has the potential to improve as the season progresses. Bey played at West Philadelphia from ‘79-81 under legendary winner Joey Goldenberg of Speedboy lore.  Goldenberg had the highest winning percent of any coach in Pub history. Bey picked up a lot of his ideas during that time and has turned them into a positive formula. The Rockets stand at 4-1 in the early going.
