Ryan holds off West Catholic, 58-56, for tough road win
PHILADELPHIA, PA -
The Archbishop Ryan Raiders held off the West Catholic Burrs, 58-56, to get a tough road Philadelphia Catholic League victory on Monday, January 15 during the evening. The 6’3” junior guard Amin Bryant filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and four blocks. Freshman forward Taleeq Robbins led the Raiders with a game-high 16 points, while junior guard Colin Reed also finished in double figures with 10 points.
In a game where Ryan led for the majority and led by double digits at times, West Catholic made a run in the fourth quarter to cut the Raider lead to two. But that's as close as the Burrs would get and Ryan held on for the road win.
It's been an up-and-down season for head coach Joe Zeglinski and the Archbishop Ryan Raiders, who are now 8-6 overall and 3-2 in PCL. Ryan shocked the high school basketball world last Wednesday, January 10, with a 78-74 victory over last year's league champion, the Archbishop Wood Vikings, but followed that with a perhaps even more shocking 71-63 defeat at the hands of Bishop McDevitt.
So as this season unfolds, we'll start to see if Archbishop Ryan is more a contender or a pretender. The Raiders face their Northeast Philly rivals, the Father Judge Crusaders, in a big time matchup on Friday night at 7 p.m. That game should tell us a lot about both the Raiders and the Crusaders. The West Catholic Burrs, who are now 1-4 in PCL play, take on a tough Archbishop Carroll Patriots team on Friday night at 7 p.m. as well.
