Archbishop Carroll Moves to 8-4 After Defeating West Catholic
The Patriots of Archbishop Carroll improved to 3-1 in Catholic League play on Friday, January 19 after defeating the Burrs of West Catholic Prep, 64-46.
A dominant first quarter proved to be too much for West Catholic to overcome as they were held scoreless for the game’s first five minutes, while Carroll went on a 13-0 run.
Throughout the first two quarters, the Patriots rode the wave of their opening run and held a 37-25 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, West Catholic was finally able to cut the lead to single digits as freshman forward Zaakir Williamson took over the game with his dominant play in the post. Williamson muscled his way to a game-high 16 points.
While Carroll’s offense went cold for most of the quarter, the speedy junior guard Imere Harris added 12 points from the outside and sophomore forward Joel Gomez contributed eight points.
After three quarters, Carroll’s lead had been cut to only five points and with only eight minutes left to play, the Patriots led 47-42.
That would be as close as West Catholic would come to pulling off the comeback. Guard Justin Anderson and forward Keyon Butler, the Patriots’ senior leaders, made sure they led from wire to wire.
Anderson led the team with 15 points, while Butler scored 13 points and grabbed a team high five rebounds. Carroll’s underclassmen made key contributions too as junior forward Luke House scored 14 points and sophomore guard AJ Hoggard scored 11 points.
West Catholic falls to 6-8 on the season and sits near the bottom of the Catholic League standings at 1-5. They will look to bounce back in a tough road game this afternoon when they face Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast High School, who are currently 12-2 and undefeated in the Catholic League.
Carroll improves to 8-4 overall and will also take on a top Catholic League team on the road when they go to St. Joseph's Prep on Monday, January 22 to face the 13-2 Hawks.
