Imhotep comes back to defeat King, 54-40

In a matchup of possibly the two best teams in the Philadelphia Public League this year, the Imhotep Panthers outscored the Martin Luther King Cougars 20-4 in the third quarter, to ultimately score a 54-40 on Thursday evening.

King started out red hot on their home floor in West Oak Lane, scoring the first nine points of the game, and led Imhotep, one of the top teams in the nation, 15-7 after one quarter of play. King continued to play solid in the second quarter and held a 3-point lead, 27-24, at halftime.

But whatever Imhotep head coach Andre Noble said in the locker room - it worked. The Panthers came out with a huge intensity to start the third quarter and outscored King by 16 points in the frame, to take a 44-31 lead into the fourth and final quarter. The Panthers defense continued to cause problems for King and held on for a solid road league win.

Imhotep was led by guard Bernard Lightsey, who finished with 16 points, while forwards Jamil Riggins and Donte Scott also finished in double figures with 13 and 10, respectively.

In the loss, King got a great output from guard Denelle Holly, Jr., who scored a game-high 19 points.

With the win, Imhotep stays perfect in Philadelphia Public League play at 6-0, while King drops to 4-2 in league play.

Next week, Imhotep will play Audenried on Tuesday, January 23 at 5:30 p.m., and take on a tough Mastery Charter North Puma squad on Thursday, January 25. The Cougars, on the other hand, will battle the St. Augustine Prep Hermits today at 3:45 p.m., Math Civics & Sciences on Tuesday, January 23 at 4:30 p.m., and Audenried on Thursday, January 25 at 6 p.m.
