La Salle hands Bonner-Prendie first league loss with 61-50 upset
DREXEL HILL, PA -
In what continues to be a wild year in the Philadelphia Catholic League, the La Salle College High School Explorers pulled off an upset on Monsignor Bonner-Archbishop Prendergast's home floor, defeating the Friars 61-50. This game was originally supposed to be played on Friday January 5 but, like many games that snowy weekend, was postponed due to the inclement weather.
Even with point guard Tyreese Watson out with an injury and shooting guard Isaiah Wong playing while battling an illness, the Friars held onto a 25-21 lead over the Explorers at halftime. But La Salle used a strong third quarter, more than doubling Bonner-Prendie's scoring output in the frame, 15-7, to take a 36-32 lead into the fourth quarter, and the Explorers never looked back.
La Salle was led by point guard Allen Powell with 19 points, while 6’9” center Zach Crisler filled the stat sheet with seven points, eight rebounds and five assists. For the Friars, Tariq Ingraham led the way with 17 points, but star big man and Rider commit Ajiri Johnson was held to only four points on just three field goal attempts.
This was Bonner-Prendie's first league loss this year, dropping their PCL record to 6-1. La Salle, who came into the game at an even 3-3 in league play, jumped above the .500 mark, putting them right in the middle of the pack in the league standings.
Next up for La Salle is Bishop McDevitt on Friday, January 26 followed by a big league battle with Roman Catholic on Monday, January 29. Bonner-Prendie takes on Father Judge this Friday night but will host Neumann-Goretti, the last undefeated team remaining in the PCL, on Sunday, January 28 during the afternoon.
