Roman Catholic Pulls Out A Victory Over Archbishop Carroll
Two Philadelphia Catholic League contenders faced off in a classic matchup on Friday night as the Roman Catholic Cahillite earned a huge 70-66 road win against the Archbishop Carroll Patriots.
In what would prove to be a classic Catholic League matchup, the two teams traded leads and seemed evenly matched throughout. The difference in the game was the play of Roman junior Seth Lundy who took over in crunch time and scored a game-high 31 points.
Carroll’s scorers distributed the ball more evenly and led 33-30 at halftime. Senior guard Justin Anderson led the team with 18 points, while sophomore guard AJ Hoggard was right behind him with 17 points.
Roman would reclaim the lead in the third quarter however and entered the game’s final 12 minutes with a slim 48-46 lead.
In the game’s final quarter, both teams showed they featured clutch performers. After Carroll tied the game at 59 with just over three minutes to play, Lundy scored a quick five unanswered points by hitting a three-pointer, then speeding past everyone on Carroll’s defense for an easy layup to retake the lead.
With just over a minute remaining, Roman led 66-60 before one Carroll player showed that he was just as clutch: junior Luke House came alive.
With 1:15 remaining, House drove to the basket, scored on a layup, and was fouled. After converting the three-point play at the line, Carroll’s defense held Roman scoreless. House advanced the ball and hit a pull up three-pointer to tie the game at 66 with just one minute left in the game.
Those would be the last points that Carroll would record as Roman sophomore guard Lynn Greer scored four of his 18 points in the final minute. First, he sprinted for a go-ahead layup and then hit two clutch free throws in the final 15 seconds to give Roman the 70-66 victory.
Now at 5-3 against league opponents, Roman’s victory pulls them within striking distance of Carroll in the Catholic League standings, as they fall to 5-2. In overall play, both schools now sit at 10-5.
Carroll will look to bounce back when they host Archbishop Ryan at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 28. Roman will try to keep things rolling on Monday, January 29 when they return home for a matchup with La Salle College.
