West Chester Henderson wins District 1 5A Girls Basketball Championship

PHILADELPHIA, PA -

On Saturday, the West Chester Henderson Warriors defeated the Villa Maria Hurricanes, 41-32, to claim the District 1 Girls 5A Basketball Championship and remain undefeated (28-0) on the season. Grace Ferguson was the leading player of the game for Henderson, scoring 11 points and having three blocks on the defensive end in the final three minutes of the game to seal the win.

Henderson led for a majority of the game, but Villa Maria secured a lead after one quarter of play, making the score 10-8. However, a strong second quarter from the Warriors put them on top heading into the locker room, 22-14. The Hurricanes trimmed the lead in a low-scoring third quarter to 24-21 as Henderson only scored two points in the entire 8-minute period. But thanks to clutch baskets and huge blocks by Ferguson in the fourth quarter, Henderson held on for the win.

For Villa Maria, Abby Walheim led all scorers with 12 points and Paige Lauder finished with 11. For Henderson, Abbey Shea also finished in double figures with 10 points, and Maddie DePrisco and Erin Thompson chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively,

In the first round of the PIAA 5A Basketball championship tournament, Henderson will take on the No. 8 seed out of District 3, Spring Grove, while Villa Maria will battle the No. 3 seed out of District 12 and semifinalist in the Philadelphia Catholic League, Archbishop Carroll.
