Galloping Ghosts Gallop Away with Their Second Consecutive PIAA D1 6A Championship

The Abington Galloping Ghosts won their second consecutive PIAA District 1 6A boys championship on Saturday, March 3 by handing the previously undefeated Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials their first loss of the season.

The Ghosts overcame a nine-point halftime deficit and 29 points from Colonials senior guard Ish Horn to become back-to-back champs with a 75-73 victory.

Right from the first quarter Abington showed that they could run with the 27-0 Colonials. Plymouth Whitemarsh started the game on a 7-2 run. Abington responded by scoring five straight points to tie the game in the opening minutes.

Both teams brought stellar post play and star performances by senior guards to the floor of the Liacouras Center.

Horn led all scorers and seemed to find the edge for a layup every time the Colonials needed a big basket. But Abington senior guard Robbie Heath kept pace with him and tied for the team lead in scoring with 25 points.

In the paint, the marquee matchup was between two junior post players.

At 7’3”, Plymouth Whitemarsh center Naheem McLeod is a nightmare for any defender. However, his 20 points was not the most impressive performance by a player in the post in this game.

Junior power forward Eric Dixon, at 6’7”, scored 25 hard earned points, tying him with Heath for the team lead.

Heath and Dixon took the game over after halftime with a 12-0 run in the third quarter that contributed to a 20-point quarter for Abington. Their comeback was fueled by a series of layups that resulted in a trip to the foul line. “Whenever we get those and ones, it feels good,” said Heath.

In the fourth quarter, Horn and some inconsistent foul shooting from Abington made it a game again, but the Ghosts’ third quarter surge proved too much to overcome.

For the second consecutive season, Abington celebrated a district championship on a Big 5 court. “It never gets old,” said Dixon. “Just because we’re here again doesn’t mean it gets old.”
