Penncrest vs. Bishop Shanahan PIAA District 1 5A Championship
The Eagles of Bishop Shanahan from the Ches-Mont league had a great season, one of their best with a 22-4 overall record. On Saturday, March 3, they played against the PIAA District 1 5A defending champion, the Penncrest Lions of the Central League, and absorbed a complete and total destruction. A buzz saw of a small player that has been talked about for the entire season named Tyler Norwood took on all comers and put on a show for the ages.
Norwood simply could not be covered by anyone. His ability to create space and shots for himself was quite impressive to say the least as he scored 27, while the intense defense of head coach Mike Doyle completely shut down the up until this game potent offense of Shanahan and held the entire team to 28 points for the game.
Norwood is listed at 5’11”, which appears to be extremely generous as is quite often the case in basketball rostering. However, 5’8” might be more accurate. Nonetheless, he was a force to be reckoned with the entire game and simply could not be denied the shots he was creating again and again. A classic baby-faced killer, if seen off the court, he might appear to be about 14 or 15 years old.
No Division 1 offers have been tendered to this young man, and a lot of that has to do with his diminutive stature. He is more than qualified academically, and according to his coach, could not be a better student athlete. His stock value has just gone up significantly, and someone would be wise to invest (hello Big 5 and Drexel). Contrary to what casual fans of basketball might think size is not everything.
Meanwhile, Penncrest held Shanahan to one basket in the second half until 1:42 of the fourth quarter. In the end, the final score was 50-28. For both of these teams, it’s on to the states.
