Bishop McDevitt Strolls Past Crusaders to Advance in 3A Boys Championships
On Wednesday, the Royal Lancers of Bishop McDevitt rolled into the next round of the PIAA 3A Boys Championships with a dominant win over the Notre Dame-Green Pond Crusaders 77-51.
The game started off close, but after a slow start, the Royal Lancers picked it up and never looked back. Will Chavis, Bishop McDevitt’s coach, described his players as “lackadaisical” in the beginning, but after a timeout, the Royal Lancers came out and “picked up their energy,” said Chavis. The game got out of reach as Cameron Gardner drained a three as the halftime buzzer went off, giving Bishop McDevitt a commanding 23-point lead.
Bishop McDevitt played with great ball movement, moving the ball inside and out and doing as they please. Their pace and transition offense in the second half was too much to handle for the Crusaders. Sophomore guard Robert Smith led in points, but they played great team basketball as four Royal Lancers had nine or more points.
Chavis explains the key to their success is their chemistry. “The kids like each other. They hang out a lot and came together as a group,” he said.
On the defensive side, they were forcing a lot of shots from outside that the Crusaders could not knock down. The shots were not falling for the Crusaders, but they continued to shoot from deep because they could not penetrate to get into the paint. They did a good job of hustling for rebounds, but could not get as many second chance points as they would like.
Juniors Filippo Baldo and Zach DeFoe had good games as they both eclipsed double digits, but they just did not have the help they needed to keep pace with the Lancers.
Bishop McDevitt will square off against Neumann-Goretti in the quarterfinals on Saturday to see if they can keep this season alive.
One thing Coach Chavis will like to see his players improve on for that matchup is “to be tougher and work on rebounding.”
