Neumann-Goretti Boys Cruise Past Richland for Another State Title

The Saints of Neumann-Goretti dominated in the PIAA 3A Championship on Wednesday, March 28, with a 57-42 win over the Rams of Richland for their fifth straight state title. They have been a powerhouse of a team, making this their eighth title in the past nine years.

Four of those state titles included senior Dymir Montague on the team.

“It never gets old. It travels with you your whole life,” Montague said about winning his fourth state title.

He gave his best effort in this game to make it a perfect 4-for-4. The Holy Family recruit finished with a team-high 23 points. He shot 4-for-8 from deep, making it 7-for-15 overall, and he made all but one of his six free throw attempts. His presence was felt on both sides of the ball as he finished with six boards, five steals, and four blocks. He was doing it all for the Saints and only turned the ball over once.

“A lot of hard work and dedication behind it, it was made for me to put on this performance today,” Montague said about his game.

His fellow classmate and 6’9” George Washington recruit Marcus Littles helped out with six points, six rebounds, four blocks, and a steal. His numbers may not jump off the page with excitement, but his size and presence was felt, making it difficult for the Rams to get the ball inside when he was on the floor.

After coming off an amazing buzzer beater in the semifinals to push the Rams through to the big game, senior Tyler Zimmerman put on a good performance yet again. He finished with 16 points and had three blocks, steals, and rebounds. He carried his team in the fourth quarter to give them their 8-0 run. He also had a pair of quick steals, back-to-back 3-pointers, and a layup to cut the deficit to 10, but it just wasn't enough.

The Saints were just too much for the Rams to handle. They were quicker, played tougher, controlled the tempo of the game, and just were the more talented team. They put on a little show with a couple of slams too.

“We played to our strengths and not weaknesses. We played team basketball,” Montague said about how they pulled off another state title.
