Upper Dublin Boys Baseball Beats Rival Hatboro Horsham

The Cardinals of Upper Dublin defeated the Hatters of Hatboro-Horsham Wednesday afternoon by a score of 4-1. Since 2004, the Hatters are winning the overall record between these two rivals, but this time the Cardinals got the win.

It was not a clean game for either of these teams. Both teams had some errors, bad decisions, and not much of an offense. The Hatters only had a total of six hits, the same as the Cardinals. They had three errors compared to only one for the Cardinals. The one error for the Hatters was a pivotal one. There were two outs in the bottom of the second inning. They already had given up two runs in the inning due to Alex Crim hitting a batter with the bases loaded, and then walking in the next batter. After the pitching mistakes, an easy ground ball got hit to shortstop, Jake Bianchini fields it cleanly and fired it to second. The ball was dropped and two more runs crossed the plate to push the deficit to four.

Crim settled in after that inning to go on to pitch the complete game. Those were the only runs given up. He finished with three strikeouts and the same amount of walks, but hit five batters. He struggled to find his accuracy throughout the game, but did not have much help behind him with the defense or run support from the offense.

The Hatters managed to get some life in the fifth and sixth inning, but only could get one run out of it. With a man on first and second in the fifth inning, Anthony Bruno crushed the ball so deep to center that the fielder could not get to it. A runner scored, and as the second runner was rounding third to try to cut the deficit in half, head coach Peter Moore second guessed and told him to stay, but he slipped on his way back to the base and got tagged out.

In the next inning, the Hatters had men on first and third. They started to gain some momentum again, but they tried to steal second and the Cardinals threw it down to second and back to home to get the runner at the plate. It killed all momentum the Hatters were trying to strike up. They could only manage to score a run that inning and for the whole game.

Senior Garrett Breslin pitched an impressive game for the Cardinals. He had three strikeouts, only one walk, and only gave up five hits. He almost went the distance, pitching six and a third innings before being relieved by senior Ryan Besachio, who finished off the game with the help of a double play.
